EHS Students Welcome 2014 With New Resolutions

By Lorena Coleman

As we say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014, many people see the coming year as a new start. For some, a new year signifies a clean slate, a chance to redeem themselves; while for others, it marks the beginning of change. From saving money for college to deciding to travel around the world, many resolutions require a lot of work.

Ever wonder why there seems to be triple the amount of weight loss commercials on TV in January than the rest of the year? One of the most common resolutions is to get active or fit.

Senior Zach Elliott stated his resolution is “to get in better shape, and build muscle,” by keeping himself active. “Although, to be honest, it probably won’t happen.” He added, and Elliot is not alone. According to Forbes.com, only 8% of people that make resolutions for the New Year manage to make them stick at the end of the year.

Junior Lauren Gabriel resolved to “not procrastinate as much this year.” Gabriel hopes she can keep herself from frequently waiting until the last minute to do things.

Sophomore Mariah Brown pledged to push herself past her comfort zone this year, in sports and everyday life. “I want to be the best version of myself,” she stated.

If you really want to make your resolutions last, here are some tips. First, acknowledge the old saying “Tomorrow never comes”, and do not wait until tomorrow to start. Set your goals today and continue to work towards them. For example, if you resolved to learn how to play the guitar, pick up a guitar and start practicing today.

Secondly, get inspired. If you have made a resolution for a particular reason, remind yourself why you have made that resolution in the first place. For example, if you have decided to save money to go on a vacation, look up where you would like to go. Doing this will motivate you to hang on to that $20 dollar bill instead of using it to buy a new sweater.

Even if you didn’t make a resolution this year, making an effort to try something new will make 2014 a memorable year, and hopefully a successful one as well.
