“The course of true love never did run smooth.” is a line from this year’s spring play: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play is being directed by Shannon Pickett. The ten main parts are played by seniors Lorena Coleman (Hippolyta), Stephen Ogden (Demetrius), Mariana Rosales (Hermia), and Kennedy O’Dell (Titania), juniors Grant Ludwick (Theseus), Sidney Johnson (Helena), and Chloe O’Dell (Puck), and finally sophomores Carlos Rodriguez (Lysander), Auston McNorton (Bottom), and Jayce McQueen (Oberon).

“I chose this play because we always have so much fun reading and performing it in the sophomore English class. We do a project where students modernize the original Shakespeare, videotape it, and share it with the class. I am always amazed at how much extra time and effort many groups spend on this project, and they are always hilariously funny. It’s a challenging play because it is Shakespeare, but most of the students are familiar with it because we have studied it in class,” said Mrs. Pickett on her choosing of the show.

The play has a very complicated plot line but one that young audiences can relate to because it addresses the ever changing relationships of young love. Not only are there scenes of young love, but also, an alternate plot line that follows a group of working class men who decide to go practice a play in the woods.

“My favorite scene is the ‘play within the play,’the performance of ‘Pyramus and Thisbe.’ The premise is that a group of day laborers, people with no acting ability, decide to perform a dramatic play similar to Romeo and Juliet at the Duke’s wedding. It is a complete disaster and very funny,” she goes on to say.

The cast will have two months before they will have to perform. The play will be held in the PAC on Saturday, February 22.
