Have you heard the big news? Eudora High School is finally getting a women’s golf team. Susan DeVoe, Campbell McNorton, and Kathleen Pope proposed the idea of a women’s golf team to the school board and it was happily approved.

Women’s golf will be a fall sport and should start during the beginning of the 2020 school year. Fundraising for the team will start as soon as possible and there will be a meeting will soon be announced. Fundraising for the sport is a big deal, as the school needs money to fund the team.

“It’s just that important,” explained Susan DeVoe, our school’s social worker. DeVoe would be happy to donate some of her salary back to fund the team, which many wouldn’t do. “I just have the financial flexibility, and it would help,” said DeVoe.

Unlike other sports where there is a limited participation number, golf is different. Anyone can practice and play golf, however, only 12 people can go to tournaments and meets. There can only be six people on the junior varsity team and six on the varsity team. This is okay though, there is never a set team, therefore anyone can move up positions in golf.

Sophomore, Kathleen Pope is looking forward to next year’s golf season. Pope was one of the girls who went and spoke in front of the school board to convince them to allow the school a women’s golf team. “I think the new team is going to be a great opportunity for the girls,” said Pope.

Pope is very excited to be a part of the new golf team and she thinks it is going to be something very exciting.“My favorite part about the golf team is that it is a team sport, but you can also excel individually,” said Pope.
