imageEvery month I will be highlighting a travel destination that will be chosen with Eudora students and their unique interests in mind. The destination could be near or far but it will be worth every wonderful second of your time.

If you have a knack for adventure then you have landed in the right place. This month I will start off with the close destination – The Flint Hills.

I know what you’re thinking, “Oh my gosh, no, not the same Flint Hills that I have to drive through on my way to my grandma’s house every Thanksgiving.” Whether you want to hear it or not, yes, that is the exact location I am talking about. However, if you actually park the car and take a walk around this nationally known location, you will be amazed.

Open up your GPS app, locate the route to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City Kansas and pack your bags. The view from this particular site is astonishing.
In fact, it is so spectacular that National Geographic couldn’t resist writing a story on the last tallgrass prairie in the nation.

According to the National Park Service, this prairie covered nearly 170 million acres in North America and now only four percent of the land remains. The land has dwindled down quite significantly because of urban development throughout the country. Other factors that played a part in the demise of the prairie were drought and fires. Luckily, the majority of the tallgrass prairie remains right in our backyard.

So gather up an adventure crew, pack yourselves a nutritious picnic, fill the tank up with gas and venture west to the historical land of The Flint Hills.

If you do so happen to venture to the locations mentioned in Jaunt Journal, use the hashtag “#JauntJournalEHS” to share your posts with fellow adventurers and possibly see your images featured in The Cardinal or on The Cardinal Online.
