Concerts to Look Forward to at the Granada

With winter in full swing, it’s hard to find something to do that doesn’t involve staying indoors, or driving to and from work and school. Most alternatives are about as boring as your daily schedule, but upcoming events at The Granada in Lawrence could provide relief from your boring routine.

Since the 1930’s when it first was built, The Granada has been entertaining high school students and adults, with various types of events. It was originally designed to be a silent movie theater, but since the 1980’s it has been a concert venue which offers options at low ticket prices for teenagers in the whole area.

Of course, there are always more broad events to attend, such as Battle of the Bands. The 4:00pm showtime is always an option if you’re interested in the local band scene, but if you’d rather see someone a little more established, there are other options.

I’ve heard good things about the band American Aquarium, whose show is on March 3rd. American Aquarium is a southern rock band whose critics are few and far between while reviews of their work sing praises. They’ve just come out with a new album called Burn. Flicker. Die., about the cultural divide between southern and city lifestyle.

If you’re into something a little lighter, Mat Kearney is coming to The Granada on March 15th, along with Parachute and Judah & The Lion. These bands are known for their lighter sound, love songs and the like. Mat just came out with another album, Young Love.

One critic states, “Butterflies. Hope. Honesty. Pain. All of those words get at the essence of what Young Love is all about.”

Finally, Walk the Moon is a band that I personally enjoy listening to, after hearing them open for a larger band over the summer. They’re more of an upbeat alternative band, another end of the music spectrum covered by the bookings at The Granada. Playing March 26th, this concert is the one farthest away date-wise, but I’ll still be sure to attend. Having seen them live, I can say their buoyant attitude translates from their music into their performances very well. If their new album, Talking is Hard, is as good as their last release, it’ll be sure to please the live audience as well as they used to.

Are any of your favorite bands making an appearance at The Granada anytime soon? The Granada has an online calendar to look at, with the performance posters showing opening bands, prices, and showtimes. Most concerts are on weekdays, if you’re looking for a dramatic schedule change to shake things up. If not, there are other weekend options as well. Happy concert attending!
