Over 54 people involved, many late nights, and a little over 2 months later Shrek the Musical hit the stage at EHS as one of the most attended performances the high school has put on in years with an audience of roughly over a thousand people.

Mrs. Ramirez decided to put on the play after seeing Shrek the Musical at Theatre Lawrence in February 2014. While she was sitting through the show she was thinking of the ways she could work on pulling this off. A few months later Ramirez held auditions for Shrek the Musical.

Senior Zakada Fitzgerald, who played Shrek, spent a lot of time preparing for the show.

He commented, “It was hard to balance everything out, and I got very little sleep when the show was close.”

Many of members of the cast and crew had to balance the musical with schools, sports, clubs, or even work.

Junior Sydney Coleman, who played a various amount of roles stated, “It was a ton of work juggling between all the practices plus extra time outside of school and sports. It was difficult but I managed.”

The first performance was held on Thursday, November 13, and the next show was on Saturday, November 15. Each night had two other fundraisers taking place. The EHS band held a spaghetti dinner for anyone seeing the play for $5, and the drama department sold Shrek ears. Each of these got members of the audience excited to see the show.

When the curtains were pulled and the show began, the cast and crew were put to the final test to see if their hard work paid off.

“During the shows, we were all at our peak performances, and it was exciting to see all of our hard work come together.” Coleman shared.

Fitzgerald’s favorite parts of the musical was hearing the audience’s laughs throughout the entire play.

With the success of Shrek it left audiences wondering what is going to be the musical next year. Mrs. Ramirez is not one to give away any secrets but with whatever she chooses it is sure to be fantastic.
