The final buzzer has rung for the 2013-2014 scholars bowl season. Although it has been difficult, the team beat the odds and went to state!

Head coach Bonnie Daigh, had this to say about their struggles, “We have struggled a little this year due to conflicts with team members’ other schedules.  Several of our team members are active in sports, band, choir and the musical so putting together a complete team to cover all the areas of content covered is challenging.”

The team traveled to Paola on Monday, Jan. 13 to compete in the league tournament. They placed fourth with a 3-3 record.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the scholars bowl crew took a trip down to Baldwin where they had a record of 9-1 and placed first.

Their last meet before regionals was again in Paola. The Cards tied for second place with a record of 6-2.

Regionals took place on Monday, Feb. 10 at Perry. The scholars bowl team finished first in their pool. Not only did they finish first in the pool, but overall they placed first and won regionals!

Senior Rebekah Case competed in her last meet and had this to say, “I’m going to miss the time spent with my friends at scholars bowl meets, and I’m going to miss the camaraderie we have when we’re together.”

Daigh has watched the three seniors, Kennedy O’Dell, Mason Kelso, and Case for all four years compete in these meets. She will miss them dearly.

“Kennedy, Rebekah and Mason have been a part of scholars bowl for all four years. They each add to the team with their different academic strengths. Kennedy has really studied to be able to answer questions about literature, Mason is strong when it comes to music definitions and composers, Rebekah is strong in foreign language and science so when they are together on a team we do well. They have learned to work together as a team and not worry so much about who is earning the points as how well they are doing collectively as a team.”

State was hosted in Desoto on Saturday, Feb. 15. EHS did not have as good of luck at this meet. The Cards were unable to make it out of pool play.

The 2013-2014 scholars bowl team was the first team to make it in state in 20 years. Congrats on a great season!
