Student Opinion on Climate Change

Story by Fabian Rosales »

Is it real? Is it fake? Climate change has been a highly debated topic over the past years.  How climate change affects us and whether or not it is actually a problem are contentious subjects.  There have been many arguments over climate change.Usually, people argue over whether it’s real or fake.

“I believe that climate change is real” said Kori Cadue Sr. “It’s not getting hotter for no reason.”

What is climate change anyway? Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

“We have CO2 in the atmosphere”, Cadue said. “The temperatures, including sea surface, are constantly rising.”

Although not all students agree that climate change is real.

“Fake news,” is what Senior Weston Trefz is calling climate change. Other students do believe in it, but it’s something not to worry about.

“It’s happening, but people need to freak out less,” said Andrew Zook Sr., “It’s been happening for years and we’re recovering from an ice age.”

Junior Westley Hutton believes that it’s something that we need to focus on.

“I think that it’s a very serious problem that is slowly, but surely becoming a bigger and bigger problem as years go by,” Hutton said.

If you believe climate change is real, what can we do as students? It’s very easy to protect the environment, use the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Although it’s not easy for only one student to make a lasting change in the environment,. if many students contribute the impact can be amplified. Although for students like Junior Bobby Lounsbury, it’s difficult to make an impact if you’re the only one.

“I try to be environmentally responsible, but I feel like it is kind of hard as one citizen to make a difference,” said Bobby Lounsbury Jr.
