The Consensus on Reading

Story by Hayden Miller »

Is reading cool? Well, that depends on who you ask.

Sophomore English teacher Mrs. Pickett believes that it is.

“Yes, definitely,” said Pickett when she was asked if reading was cool. “Many tv series and movies are taking the place of reading nowadays.”

However, many students today don’t read much in their free time. Why? Well, according to Mrs. Pickett, this could be caused by the amount in reading they caused by the amount in reading they do during the school day. If a student has spent their entire day reading from textbooks it is unlikely that they would go home and start reading again — especially if they have access to media applications, like Netflix or YouTube.

Sophomore Noah Watkins confirms this theory.

“Two out of three times I would watch Netflix over reading,” Watkins said.

However, Noah is not the only student who doesn’t during his free time. Fellow sophomore Mason Hart said that he also doesn’t read in his free time but instead spends his free time on his phone to pass the time.

There are also students like Sophomore Brett Breedlove, whose opinion on reading is overwhelmingly positive. He’d even go as far as to say that it’s magnificent.

“Reading is amazing,” Breedlove said, “It takes you on wild adventures across vass lands of imagination to places where you discover who you really are.”
