Students are spending a lot of their time in Lawrence

With limited options for places to go in Eudora, many students find themselves driving into Lawrence on a regular basis, sometimes even daily. These trips into the larger city can be for jobs, entertainment, food, and other things as well.

“I go to Lawrence about three times a week,” said Emma Foster, Soph. “We usually go grocery shopping, and sometimes I go into town with my friends. I don’t have my own car so I’m always with somebody else.”

So, some students who don’t even have their own car find themselves in Lawrence multiple times a week. This phenomenon tends to lead to students driving in an area with more reckless drivers and car accidents, and leaves them driving home in the dark on the historically dangerous K-10 route back home.

However, recent highway improvements such as the South Lawrence Trafficway make the regular trek students take a little bit easier.

“I worked at Culver’s [in Lawrence],” said Clayton Faircloth, Sr. “I had to drive there before they put in the new bypass, and it took almost forty minutes. Now I could get there in like 12.”

Whether a student’s trip to Lawrence is shortened by the addition of the bypass or not, it’s very clear that students are forced to leave Eudora to fulfill many needs elsewhere due to the number who drive there so often.
