Eudora Student Takes 4-H by Storm
By Camden Leary
To many students 4-H is just something that they know exists but don’t know what it involves or what it can mean for the future of those involved. It is just something that the kids who live on farms do that has no potential benefit or profit. However, to EHS senior Justin Leonard, 4-H provides an outstanding amount of benefits and opportunities.
“4-H opens many doors to a youth’s future through the skills it teaches.” Leonard said was one the most important things one can gain from being an active part in 4-H. Leonard has been a large part of 4-H for eleven years by entering cattle, pigs, and different types of displays in 4-H competitions. Throughout his eleven years Leonard has won many, many awards for a multitude of things but one in particular stands out from the rest.
The Good Manners award is an award that is given to a 4-Her that exudes good manners (obviously), enters some sort of livestock in 4-H, has good sportsmanship, and is involved in 4-H and the community. Not only do you have to exude these attitudes you also have to keep your animal stalls clean and organized for the judges. Leonard has been carefully watched throughout his years in 4-H and was chosen to be the recipient of the Good Manners award this year at the annual 4-H competition this past August in Lawrence.
“It felt like the happiest moment of my life! So far!” Leonard told us when asked about how it felt to receive this award. This award also meant a lot to Leonard’s family, who were all there to support and cheer on Leonard as he received his award, which meant so much to him.
“This award means that I have finally stepped up my game and competitiveness in the organization.” Leonard will continue his involvement in 4-H until he is too old to participate and will definitely be a force to reckon with in the coming years.
Even though Leonard is an outstanding 4-H member there are many others that participate in 4-H here at EHS. Some of these 4-Hers include: Mariah Brown, Tanner Beebe, Chloe O’Dell, Kennedy O’Dell, Mason Kelso, Tucker Gabriel, Austin McNorton, Blake McNorton, Travis Neis, Trevor Neis, Lauren Gabriel, Dalton Vesecky, Lacey Vesecky, and Holly Swearingen.
“It is never too late to join 4-H, except after you turn nineteen years old. If you don’t have a sport to participate in 4-H is a great extracurricular activity to be involved in.” Leonard stressed. So, if you find yourself bored at home with nothing to do, go join a 4-H club and get involved! It will provide you with many skills and opportunities that will help you later in life. As their motto says, “Make the best BETTER.”
