Breast Cancer Awareness Month had the Eudora fall sports teams wearing pink in addition to their usual Cardinal colors. The month of October is always a time to wear pink to increase awareness and show support for friends and family who are fighting for their lives. Our fall sports teams have each found unique ways to express their support and share their thoughts this month.

Camdon Willits, Soph. football player, has a personal connection to this month because he and his family have have been on the front lines of the battle against cancer.

“This month is valuable to me because my mom had cancer and she was completely healthy afterwards and I’m very grateful for that,” Willits said. In the future Willits hopes to get his team to start wearing pink socks to show their support.

Paisley Labelle, Jr. cheerleader, loves having the opportunity to show her support. She gets to wear the tall bright pink socks, the magnificent pink bows, and the pretty in pink poms that her team has chosen to wear during October.  She and her cheer team have been doing this because they all love supporting others and it is such a great cause for her. Labelle feels proud that her team gets the opportunity to show their support.

“I believe the most valuable thing this month is spreading that awareness for breast cancer and influence others to wear pink for the cause,” Labelle said.

The dance team has recently done bake sales to help fundraise for breast cancer awareness. Jillian Hopson, Sr., is a team captain and has wanted to do more to help and support others.  She loves that fact that people care and want to help out others in the making of the process.

“It makes me feel like I’m doing a good cause for others fighting.”

Halle Norris, Sr. cross country runner, says that her team has not chosen to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. Through that doesn’t mean they don’t hope to bring some new ideas to the team and encourage the team to find a way to show their love for October in the future.

Norris wants to make a change.

“This month is important to me because I know people that have gone through breast cancer and it was hard for me knowing they did,” Norris said.

For years now, Bret Folks, Sr., and the rest of the soccer team have worn pink athletic tape around their arms and legs. Folks wears his pink jersey throughout the month because he believes it gives him luck when he plays. He loves to show his support because he values helping the cause personally in some way.

“The most valuable part of this month to me is just spreading the awareness around to everyone and getting those people with cancer the help they need,” Folks said.

Kolbi Shanks, Sr. volleyball player, and her team have done Dig Pink Night for many years. They raise money throughout the week of the actual match, with bake sales and donations. Recently at their games they have done mini games, where some in the crowd have a chance to pay a $1 for a serve to  try to hit a t-shirt on the court, and if they succeed, they keep the shirt, and this happens during matches to raise money as well. Shanks and her team love to support by also wearing their Dig Pink jerseys to the games because every single girl on the court loves to show the love and support for the ones fighting.

“Something very valuable to me this month is just making sure that people battling cancer are thought of, supported, and loved by so many more than they even know and dedicating a month to them makes them feel special said Shanks.”

Weston Trefz, Jr., said that scholars bowl doesn’t do much visibly show their support during competition. Through lots of things go through their minds when they are competing and they know that they would do anything as a team to help out the cause.

“It’s an important month to me because I like knowing that others are supporting for breast cancer, because I’ve never taken the time to really think about the whole thing, because it’s very heartbreaking,” said Trefz.
