Cardinal Nursing Assistants

In August 2010, Eudora’s Health Careers program was born. Over the course of six years, numerous students have gone through the entire program and received their Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Medical Assistant certifications. There are three total classes in the program: Health Careers I, Health Careers II, and Health Careers III, which is also called OJT, or On The Job Training, and Topics in Health Science.

“I have definitely learned a lot of useful skills taking this class,” said Nich Elliot, Sr. “Taking the CNA course in Health Careers II has prepared me for what it really will be like after high school and college, and when I am thrown out into the adult world.”

Mrs. Pyle and Mrs. Young are the two instructors of the courses. Health Careers I exposes students to the variety of careers within the healthcare industry. Students also learn the basics of medical terminology, body systems, and health care systems. According to Mrs. Pyle, Health Careers II is more “in depth” as students will look more into medical terminology, vital signs, disease prevention, CPR/AED/First Aid certification, ethical and legal responsibilities, and patient care.

The final course, Health Careers III/OJT/Topics in Health Science, gives students the opportunity to do on-the-job training, volunteering, or shadowing in a healthcare setting. Students can also complete their Home Aid Certification (HHA), CMA Certification, or participate in online college courses relating to health care.

“Even if students decide not to work as a CNA,” Mrs. Pyle said, “completing the certification course is many times a requirement for nursing school and can help students differentiate themselves from other applicants in the areas of Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Medical School, Dentistry, etc.  The fact that it can all be completed while in high school is a great opportunity!”
