Story by Liz Kendall

In the second edition of Jaunt Journal, I will be highlighting a location that is a tad farther from home than the Flint Hills (featured in the previous Jaunt Journal). This month’s destination is Fayetteville, Arkansas.

I am fairly biased to this location since it will be my new home for college in less than a year and it is lovely to say the least. Fayetteville is roughly 250 miles from Eudora – four hours if you do the math.

You might be thinking “Why in the world would I want to sit in a car for four hours on a Saturday morning when I could be sleeping away my day?” Well, if you grab a few of your favorite friends, create a “fire” playlist and make a pitstop for an Icee, then you will most likely enjoy this small road trip.

Fayetteville, commonly referred to as “Fayettechill”, is full of beautiful views and numerous activities to keep you occupied. There is a street in Fayetteville that closely resembles Massachusetts St. in Lawrence, Kansas that is called Dickson St. Here you will find many “Ma and Pa” shops that carry unique Arkansas items. My personal favorite store on Dickson St. is Fayettechill – a clothing store that focuses on hiking and other outdoor adventures.

A short drive outside of Fayetteville is Devil’s Den State Park. At Devil’s Den there are many different trails to test your hiking abilities. Once you reach the end the views are amazing. At three miles long, Yellow Rock Trail is the most widely known trail at Devil’s Den It eventually leads to Yellow Rock Bluff, which was named after its iron-oxide sandstone according to arkansasstateparks.com. Devil’s Den State Park is open 8am-5pm on weekdays and 8am-8pm on the weekends.

For this jaunt you will need the following items:

  • A car

  • Navigation system of some sort – map, phone, GPS, etc.

  • Spending money

  • Adventure clothing

If you do so happen to venture to the locations mentioned in Jaunt Journal, use the hashtag “#JauntJournalEHS” to share your posts with fellow adventurers and possibly see your images featured in The Cardinal or on The Cardinal Online.
