From heights… to creepy crawlies… to nonexistent diseases… almost everyone has something they’re afraid of. Fear is a built-in emotion for humans and it’s useful in protecting us from danger. According to Kidshealth.org, people often end up fearing things that can’t actually hurt them because they feel unsure or unsafe in the situation. A few of the more common irrational fears are spiders and snakes. However, there are some students here at EHS that have phobias that are downright unusual.

“I am afraid of moths because they’re just creepy and I don’t like things that fly near me,” said Senior Abby Hollinger, “They’re like Satan butterflies.”

Hollinger doesn’t like any flying insects, especially moths, gnats, and flies. Although she isn’t the only one who has this fear, Hollinger is one of the people who fears flying bugs more intensely than others.

Fellow senior Nicole Tener has a different, but just as terrifying, fear.

“I️’m terrified of clowns,” said Tener. “They seem all cute and fun, but no, they’re hiding something behind all that.”

It seems that the fear of clowns is common among a lot of people, but some are deathly afraid of them.

Others have fears that are truly unique, such as Sophomore Brooke Kornmueller’s fear of having her bed in the center of the room.

“No matter how I lay I feel like there’s someone on the other side of me,” Kornmueller said, “So I always have it against the wall. I physically can’t sleep like that.”

Our minds often play tricks on us when we are faced with the unknown.

What’s your fear?
