Friendships and How They Change

Story by Brett Breedlove »

High school is a wonderful, magical, and mysterious place. It opens up hundreds of opportunities to explore your interests and see what could best fit your future. A large part of high school is friendship. Sometimes it can be hard to keep friendships together unless you have the chance to interact with your peers. To maintain that connection, many students have to find time outside of school to hang out because they have little to no classes with their friends.

“We play sports together and hang out outside of school together,” said Senior Noah Katzenmeier.

Jon Bock, a friend of Katzenmeier, added to that statement by mentioning where they go when they hang out outside of school.

“We go to Munchers a lot,” Bock said.

A very important aspect of friendship is how it can change over time. In middle school, you have every class with other students in the same grade. This is very different from high school, where you are given the opportunity to share classes with students from other grades. This naturally leads to new friendships.

“My friendships in high school have changed quite a bit,” said Junior Kyla Etter, “I have had one or two solid friends who haven’t changed.”

Many students will lose certain friendships over the course of four years, but most will add people to the group that they socialize with.

“I don’t think it’s about staying with the same group in high school,” explained Sophomore Brooke Kornmueller, “It’s fun to have different friends from all over.”
