What’s your Snapchat score?

First thing in the morning, Delaney Franklin, Frosh., wants to check her phone right away. If she’s taking a shower she will force herself to wait until she’s ready, knowing she has things to do to get ready for the day. Franklin is constantly working to keep her streaks. But there’s actually a little math behind her 487+ day streak and the Snapchat score that she has earned that a streak like this contributes to.

The general principle is simple: snapchat scores go up a point for every snap sent out and every snap received. So does that mean that if a person’s score is 500 they’ve sent and received 250 snaps? Well, not exactly. All in all, one point is received for each snap sent regardless of how many people it was sent to and one point is added from snaps received. A different picture means another point.

So when some people send out a snapchat to multiple people and recents, their score only goes up one point – but each snap they receive back also gives them a point.

For those who don’t know, Snapchat users sustain streaks by sending each other at least one snapchat (picture) every day. Chats are not worth points and they don’t keep streaks.

According to bustle.com, if you have a strong social media following, your score may be an indication of how well your social media presence on Snapchat is working. The reason Snapchat thinks they need to keep track of your snap points is simple. It’s all about the competition. Everyone likes to win and if there’s a chance that they can have the highest score, many people are in for the challenge.

Samantha Gregory, Soph., often finds herself on Snapchat.

“I usually snapchat in the mornings, always at lunch and right after practice. My highest streak is 668 days,” Gregory said.

Franklin finds herself in similar shoes: “I have 28 streaks and my highest is 487 days! So I’m on snapchat all the time,” said Franklin. “I guess people would rather snapchat me then text me.”
