Students and sleep
story by Bree Moore
Having time to sleep is a struggle for people here at Eudora High School. People have work and homework and can become completely overwhelmed by the little random things that go on during their day.
Jenna Beck, Sr., gets around 7.5 hours of sleep a day. Her senior year has been extremely stressful for her with work, sports, homework, and her social life. Every day her evenings are consumed by homework which causes her to stay up late. Typically, Beck doesn’t fall asleep until 11:30. When she finally makes it to bed, she ends up spending hours on her phone because she can’t fall asleep.
“I’m usually really tired from staying up and it always takes a while for me to fully be awake for the day,” Beck said.
Chloe Hernandez, Frosh, is in a similar situation with 5-6 hours of sleep. According to Hernandez, freshman year is not at all difficult, and adds that it’s a transition sleeping-wise from middle school to high school.
The homework is the hardest part for her because it’s a little bit of a different difficulty range than eighth-grade year. When midnight rolls around and she knows she’s not getting much sleep that night, Hernandez stresses out.
“It is so stressful because you know you should go to bed but for some reason you aren’t tired. I am usually tired when I wake up but it gets better once my day gets going,” Hernandez said.
Zax Flaherty, Soph., is the type of guy that most people could see playing videogames and staying up late. He is only getting 6 hours of sleep and has so much to do. Flaherty says that homework has been a real struggle. Lately he has been staying up doing his homework and trying to finish it which leads to him missing sleep. Video games calm him down from the stress that he has going on with balancing work and homework. Although it wears him down physically, he admits that he has no regrets when it comes to staying up.
“It’s very stressful for me, I always worry about how much sleep I get. I normally feel horrible in the morning and then I’m fine the rest of the day.”
