Taking the Reins

Swearingen

Holly Swearingen possesses something that can be difficult for high schoolers to have: ambition. Since the age of six, Swearingen has been involved in 4H and has performed in a wide array of events. She has competed in local shows, statewide shows, and even national competitions through the organization. Along with 4H, Holly is the active vice-president of FFA at EHS.

“FFA and 4H have helped me become a better rounded individual and a better overall leader,” Holly explains.

Swearingen plans on attending Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for two years where she will judge cattle on scholarship. After her time there she aims to attend Oklahoma State University and ultimately wants to become a psychiatrist.

Sarah Wendt, the agricultural sciences teacher, has taught Holly and worked with her in FFA. Wendt owes the improvement and success of the FFA program to her and the other senior’s help along the way. Through Holly’s input, they have been able to reflect on past decisions and change the way of doing things.

“I’ve seen her leadership improve since last year. Her and the other seniors have really stepped up and taken the reins,” said Wendt.

Rocky Swearingen, Holly’s father, has seen a drive in her since she was young. Through the years he has seen her leadership skills improve greatly.

“Holly’s leadership skills have grown tremendously in 4H & FFA.  At younger ages Holly was shy and reluctant to talk and participate. Overtime the activities such as being an officer at a meeting, livestock shows and livestock judging Holly became confident in public speaking, Parliamentary procedure, and being judged publicly,” said Rocky.

Holly has many things that motivate her to do what she loves and her friends play a pivotal role.

“I’m motivated by the people I get to meet. Throughout the years I have met lifelong friends that I will always be close to,” said Holly.

Holly’s experiences in her childhood and high school have shaped who she is today and will play a major role in her future endeavors.

“My favorite thing is she loves to do what I love to do. Beyond that the best part is the group of friends she has discovered all over the United States. She literally has friends everywhere. It gives her an instant buddy wherever we go,” said Rocky Swearingen, “She has learned you have to master basic skills and expand on those you have a talent and interest in. There can be no limit to what you can achieve with hard work and support.”
