Fashion in music and culture affect our everyday lives whether we know it or not. Apps like Instagram allow us to connect with celebrities and follow their latest whereabouts and styles.

Brands feed off of social media attention. If a celebrity is shown wearing a company’s shirt, for example, their sales are going to skyrocket. It’s simple marketing.

The rise in the fashion industry can be thanks in large part to musicians. Every year, they are signing with companies or making their own clothing lines. Perhaps some of the largest influencers are in the rap industry. Figures like Kanye West, ASAP Rocky, and many others promote themselves through their clothes. And thanks to them, skate brands and other brands heavily influenced by culture are making a comeback.

“The type of song in a fashion show influences a lot. It sets the mood for the collection. If it’s a more modern themed show you wouldn’t want some country music going on,” said Haley Hoffman, Soph.

For some people, music is the jumping off point.

“A lot of music and movies influence what I like and think is cool,” said Jared Fry, Sr.
