groundhog

Some people might wake up on Tuesday, February 2nd and go about their normal routine. Most will. However, the small percentage of the population that knows or cares about Groundhog Day might wake up a little bit early, put on their finest outfit, and wait to hear how long winter will last.

The little town of Punxsutawney will host its annual celebration, attracting visitors from all over the world. This has been the tradition since 1887. Since then, people have been looking for seasonal forecasts based on a rodent’s shadow. If he sees his own shadow, we have six more weeks of whatever this weather is that we’ve been getting. If not, spring has sprung!

For people that are ready to begin a new tradition, one independent cinema in Liverpool, England plans to play a 24-hour marathon of the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. This will be the first year that they do so, but possibly not the last. In very English fashion, tea will be served to keep people upbeat about seeing the same movie so many times in a row.

So, how will you be spending Groundhog Day? Someone could request that Punxsutawney Phil’s decision be broadcast over the intercom. Others, as well as myself, question the reliability of a rodent who literally lives in a hole in the ground, who weather and seasons would have almost no effect on.
