The football game on Friday, Sep. 18 was one to remember. Spectators had been expecting rain but weren’t prepared for the dramatic change of weather.

As officials prepared to start the game, mother nature decided to take a route. A tornado touchdown had occurred and although rain, thunder and lightning are no big deal for Friday night fans, everyone was in a frenzy.

“All I remember thinking of was how scary it was, because I’ve never been away from my mom during a tornado.” Cheerleader, Addison Hinds, jr. said.

Football games are important events in High School and even though the weather was out of control, those in attendance were eager to start the game up. As the weather became more severe, there were orders to take cover in the Paola High School’s gym and locker rooms. The fans and athletes anxiously waited until the storm passed.

When games are called off of delayed, it is based on the student’s safety as well as the current weather guidelines, informed Principal Ron Abel. Officials have to pay attention to all warnings and weather information.  Certain requirements need to be followed and are focused on whether there is lightning in the area or any severe weather warnings.
