Girls Basketball

We managed to catch up with the girls basketball coach, Justin Mayer to ask him a few questions regarding some of their players lost from last season.
“We have a lot of juniors out for the team this year, and we only have two seniors. We also have a large group of freshmen and sophomores that will be fighting and competing hard for all the playing time that they can get this year.”
The girls team only has two seniors but makes up for that in the large amount of athletes in all other grades with nine juniors, six sophomores, and nine freshmen. Last year, the girls team came up one game short of the state playoffs.
“We plan to become a better team overall. As a unit we are very young and we will have to continue to improve throughout the course of the season. We count on skill and hard work to take us far, but it will take a little more to get us the two wins at sub-state that we need.”
The girls began their season on their own court against Spring Hill on Friday, December 5, losing 59-28.
“We think that the first game prepared us for the home tournament because it gave us a basis for what we need to work on and improve in practice. It helped us to realize our strengths and weaknesses as a team,” said senior Tierra Balluch following their first game.
Directly after the girls first game, they hosted the Eudora Invitational. A tournament consisting of three games where they ended up playing against Bonner Springs, Harrisonville, MO, and Wellsville. The girls lost two of the three games. In the first game they lost to Bonner Springs 47-16. In the second game they won against Harrisonville 51-43, and the final game of the tournament was lost to Wellsville 34-17. At this point in the season the girls basketball team 1-3. They play again at Louisburg on December 16.
