Book Review: Divergent
by Kennedy O’Dell
A breakdown of the latest dystopia fiction
Dystopias aren’t just the flavor of the month. Fiction set in the future has always been a fascinating topic to read about, see 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, and lately it has taken center stage. Ever since Suzanne Collins released her final book in the Hunger Games trilogy, “hungry” readers have been looking for something to fill their craving. Fear not, your search is over! New author Veronica Roth has burst onto the scene with a new thriller, Divergent. The book follows a teen girl, Beatrice, as she joins society at the age 16 by choosing a faction, or group of people that she will live the rest of her life with. In her world, all of society is divided into five groups that all hold vastly different world views and responsibilities to the group as the whole. Although initially a little tough to get into, the book picks up and builds to a crescendo that leaves you begging for more. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop!
